Grow potatoes in a sack

Why this matters

Potatoes are filling, store well, and grow happily in a sack on a patch of ground or a balcony. A single sack can yield a meaningful harvest from very little space.

What you need

A strong sack or bag, soil, compost, and a few sprouting potatoes.

These are everyday items. If you don’t have one, look for the closest alternative — the steps will tell you what to use instead.

How to do it

Follow these steps in order. Take your time. You’ve got this.

  1. Roll the sack down, add soil and compost, and place two or three sprouted potatoes on top.

  2. Cover with more soil and water, then keep the sack in a sunny spot.

  3. As shoots grow, add more soil to bury the stems, and harvest when the plants flower and die back.

Your one thing today

Set aside any potatoes that are sprouting in your kitchen today to use as seed potatoes.

Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Do this one thing now, even if it’s small.
