How to access free quality education with limited mobile data
Why this matters
A smartphone and a small data budget is now enough to access a world-class education. Most people simply do not know where to look or how to use data efficiently to make it practical.
What you need
A smartphone or basic internet-connected device
A small mobile data allowance
Occasional access to WiFi (library, school, community centre)
These are everyday items. If you don’t have one, look for the closest alternative — the steps will tell you what to use instead.
How to do it
Follow these steps in order. Take your time. You’ve got this.
Download content for offline use whenever you have access to WiFi. Khan Academy, Wikipedia, and many YouTube channels allow offline downloads at no cost.
Use Khan Academy (khanacademy.org) for mathematics, science, and literacy. It is entirely free, works on low-bandwidth connections, and covers everything from basic numeracy to university-level subjects.
Use YouTube in data-saving mode. In the YouTube app settings, enable “Data saving” and set video quality to 144p or 240p. The content is the same. The data cost is a fraction.
Join a WhatsApp study group with others learning the same skills. Sharing questions, summaries, and explanations uses almost no data and dramatically improves retention.
Set a learning schedule and treat it like a commitment. Thirty minutes a day, five days a week, adds up to over 120 hours of learning in a year.
Your one thing today
Download one Khan Academy subject for offline use today while you have WiFi.
Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Do this one thing now, even if it’s small.
Come back tomorrow
A new skill will be waiting for you tomorrow. Or if you’d like to keep learning today, explore the full library.
