Keep wounds clean when water is scarce
Why this matters
When clean water is limited, knowing how to use it wisely still keeps a wound free of infection. The right technique stretches a small amount of water a long way.
What you need
A small amount of the cleanest water available and a clean cloth.
These are everyday items. If you don’t have one, look for the closest alternative — the steps will tell you what to use instead.
How to do it
Follow these steps in order. Take your time. You’ve got this.
Use the cleanest water you have — boiled and cooled if possible — and pour rather than dip to keep it clean.
Clean from the centre of the wound outward with a clean cloth, using a fresh part each time.
Cover the wound to keep dirt out, and change the dressing whenever it becomes soiled.
Your one thing today
Set aside a small bottle of your cleanest water specifically for wound care today.
Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Do this one thing now, even if it’s small.
