Listen actively in a conversation

Why this matters

Most people listen to reply, not to understand, and miss what truly matters. Active listening builds trust and helps you respond to what was really said.

What you need

A conversation and the willingness to focus fully on the other person.

These are everyday items. If you don’t have one, look for the closest alternative — the steps will tell you what to use instead.

How to do it

Follow these steps in order. Take your time. You’ve got this.

  1. Put away distractions and give the speaker your full attention.

  2. Let them finish without interrupting, and notice their tone as well as their words.

  3. Briefly repeat back what you heard to check you understood correctly.

Your one thing today

In one conversation today, repeat back what the other person said before you reply.

Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Do this one thing now, even if it’s small.

Come back tomorrow

A new skill will be waiting for you tomorrow. Or if you’d like to keep learning today, explore the full library.
