Make a simple sling for an injured arm
Why this matters
A well-made sling keeps an injured arm or shoulder still, which reduces pain and stops a minor injury from getting worse before you reach help. You can make one from clothing you already own.
What you need
A large square of cloth, a scarf, or a triangular bandage, plus a safe pin or a knot to secure it.
These are everyday items. If you don’t have one, look for the closest alternative — the steps will tell you what to use instead.
How to do it
Follow these steps in order. Take your time. You’ve got this.
Fold a square cloth into a triangle, or use a scarf, and slide it under the injured arm bent across the chest.
Bring the lower corner up over the shoulder and tie both ends behind the neck so the hand sits slightly higher than the elbow.
Check the fingers stay warm and pink, and loosen the knot if the hand feels numb or looks pale.
Your one thing today
