Place someone in the recovery position
Why this matters
An unconscious person lying on their back can choke on their own tongue or vomit. The recovery position keeps the airway open and can keep them breathing until help arrives.
What you need
Just a flat space and your hands — no equipment required.
These are everyday items. If you don’t have one, look for the closest alternative — the steps will tell you what to use instead.
How to do it
Follow these steps in order. Take your time. You’ve got this.
Kneel beside the person, place the near arm out at a right angle, and hold the far hand against their cheek.
Bend the far knee and use it to gently roll them toward you onto their side.
Tilt the head back slightly to keep the airway open, then check breathing and call for help.
Your one thing today
Walk through the rolling motion with a willing family member today so it feels familiar.
Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Do this one thing now, even if it’s small.
