Read faster without losing meaning

Why this matters

Reading slowly wastes time you may not have, while reading carelessly loses meaning. A few techniques let you read faster and still understand what matters.

What you need

Something to read and a quiet few minutes to practise.

These are everyday items. If you don’t have one, look for the closest alternative — the steps will tell you what to use instead.

How to do it

Follow these steps in order. Take your time. You’ve got this.

  1. Glance over the headings and first lines first to get the overall shape before reading.

  2. Read in small groups of words rather than one word at a time, and avoid re-reading lines.

  3. Slow down only for the parts that carry the key meaning.

Your one thing today

Read one page today by scanning the headings first, then reading in groups of words.

Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Do this one thing now, even if it’s small.

Come back tomorrow

A new skill will be waiting for you tomorrow. Or if you’d like to keep learning today, explore the full library.
