Reduce a fever without medication
Why this matters
When medicine is not available, simple cooling and fluids can bring real relief and lower the risk of a fever causing harm. Knowing what helps — and what does not — keeps a sick person comfortable and safe.
What you need
Clean water to drink, a cloth, and a cool, shaded room.
These are everyday items. If you don’t have one, look for the closest alternative — the steps will tell you what to use instead.
How to do it
Follow these steps in order. Take your time. You’ve got this.
Remove heavy clothing and blankets and move the person to a cool, well-ventilated place.
Offer frequent sips of water or oral rehydration solution to prevent dehydration.
Place a cool, damp cloth on the forehead, neck, and underarms — never use ice or cold baths.
Your one thing today
Learn the warning signs that need a clinic today: a fever above 39°C, a stiff neck, confusion, or a rash that does not fade.
Don’t wait for the perfect moment. Do this one thing now, even if it’s small.
